Rethinking Gay Marriage
by Bill Shein
NOW THAT nearly 7,000 same-sex couples have married in
Massachusetts, the tragic result of this "assault"
on "traditional" marriage is clear. Just as
President Bush and opponents of gay marriage predicted,
the foundations of western civilization have begun to
fissure and crumble, and there's no question that gay
marriage is to blame.
Not long after the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court
upheld the right of everyone to marry anyone, we learned
that the United States -- the self-proclaimed leader of
western civilization -- was responsible for the uncivilized
torture of human beings at Abu Ghraib in Iraq, Bagram
Air Base in Afghanistan, and Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. See
how quickly gay marriage began to undermine the values
we hold dear?
And what else can explain why Iraq has become a training
ground for terrorists -- more dangerous to our civilization,
according to a recent CIA report, than Afghanistan under
the Taliban?
The answer is that the growing terrorist threat is a
direct result of the gay marriages that began in Massachusetts
on May 18, 2004, and not a product of the misguided invasion
and occupation of Iraq. Damn you, gay marriage advocates!
And no doubt it was gay people living in wedded bliss
that led President Bush to propose a 2006 budget for the
Transportation Security Administration that includes a
mere 10 cents per American for bus, subway, and rail security
-- just months after he championed a $142 billion corporate
tax cut that awarded big business a whopping $475 per
American.
Clearly, the distraction of gay marriage forced the president
to spend 4,750 times more money on corporate tax cuts
than on protecting Americans as they ride energy-efficient
mass transit. Even in the wake of the London bombings,
are homosexuals so selfish that they put their marriage
rights ahead of protecting our nation? Seriously, why
do gays and lesbians hate America?
Even a cursory scan of today's headlines shows the full
extent of the lunacy that same-sex marriage has unleashed
in America: Inaction on global warming, a failing health
care system, a tighter economic squeeze on working families,
leaks of the names of CIA operatives, supermarket shelves
filled with meat and dairy products bursting with super-bug-producing,
civilization-ending antibiotics -- need I go on?
With all of this evidence, surely the May 2005 poll that
found 84 percent of Massachusetts residents believe gay
marriage has had a positive impact or no impact at all
on the quality of life in Massachusetts was terribly flawed.
(Gay marriage must have somehow "undermined"
the science of public-opinion polling.)
Fortunately, "pro-family" advocates are working
to put a new anti-equal-marriage initiative on the ballot.
Because once the proven scourge of same-sex marriage is
eliminated, these groups can truly "focus on the
family" by fighting for health insurance for all,
a living wage, safe and quality schools, affordable higher
education, and protection of the clean air that our increasingly
asthma-prone children need. Isn't that what they'd be
doing otherwise?
Also, without gay marriage to worry about, these activists
can stop spending precious time at the Statehouse waving
"One Man + One Woman" signs -- time that is
surely better spent at home nourishing their own marriages
and families with love and attention.
So now that it's clear that the loving union of same-sex
partners has brought us closer to the end of human civilization,
we'll see if the 62 percent of Bay State residents who
support equal marriage rights will change their tune.
Because how much longer can we survive the madness that
gay marriage has unleashed?
