CHAKA CHAKA CHAKA KA-CHING!

From Interior Secretary Gale Norton's resignation letter: "Now I feel it is time for me to leave this mountain you gave me to climb, catch my breath, then set my sights on new goals to achieve in the private sector," she said in the two-page resignation letter."

" I have had great experiences as Secretary of the Interior. I released into the wild a bald eagle that had been injured and was nursed back to health by a local wildlife group. It was amazing to hold the eagle in my arms, then launch him skyward and see his mighty wings carry him back to freedom... "

" Unfortunately, Dick Cheney... he... he...well, you know the rest. "

" Unilateral pre-emptive war "... rolls off the tongue like a trail of glib melted butter. Well, let be that be a lesson to all of us: if the French won't go along with you, it's not worth doing.

Well, that "glib melted butter," as you describe it, is the official National Security Strategy of the United States, recently re-stated by the administration with no acknowledgement of how its implementation has turned out.

As for the French not supporting the invasion of Iraq, it's instructive to look a bit deeper. The level of popular support *even in countries that joined the so-called coalition* was in the high single digits to the low teens in March 2003, except for here in the U.S., where the blurring of 9/11 and Saddam was in full fact-obscuring effect.

Many tens of thousands dead, support for the U.S. tranformed into hatred and anger, Iraq a training ground and recruitment tool for al Qaeda, etc... That seems to me to be a bad outcome, and one that the French governement -- and millions of others around the world and here in the U.S. -- was correct to oppose.

All of that said, I still giggle at the phrase "cheese-loving surrender monkeys," if purely for the way it rolls off the tongue, uses the always-hilarious hard "k" sound, and includes the also-always-hilarious word "monkey."
