Holy Pajoley!
"Bush tells CBC he's 'unfamiliar' with Voting Rights Act"
C'mon, what's knowledge of the Voting Rights Act between friends? And seriously, why should he be familiar with what his own Justice Department says is "generally considered the most successful piece of civil rights legislation ever adopted by the United States Congress."
Read the gruesome truth.
By the way, here's CNN's coverage of the very same meeting. Not a mention.

Well, JJJ is certainly an unbiased source, and if says something, it must be the true Word of Gawd.
Sounds like he wasn't the only one who heard it. And the White House certainly didn't deny that the president said what he said. This isn't actually shocking news, as CR has not much of a priority for W. (understatement heavy, eh?) BTW, his dad, as a member of Congress, voted against the Voting Rights Act. Ouch.
JJJ has a hilariously serious expression in this photo ... http://www.chicagodefender.com/images/upload/bushcbc2.jpg
Ok. A 1965 Act that needs renewal every 25 years is up for renewal in 2006 ? Let's let Trigger here see if he can do the math. Go ahead, Trigger. ( Clop, Clop, Clop, Clop, Clop, Clop, Clop, Clop, Clop, Clop... etc ) What's that Trigger ? You get 2015 ? Oh well... Maybe if those concerned spent less time in character assassination and more time lobbying...
Actually, that's incorrect. The Act itself does not require reauthorization. However, there are some special provisions that permit the Attorney General and the Justice Department to review certain things that states do with regard to protecting voting rights of minorities (it's known as "preclearance" in the voting rights biz). These were envisioned as lasting only a limited time, but were renewed in 1970, 1975, and then for 25 years in 1982. So our pal Trigger -- while perhaps a noble stallion -- is not a horse who knows the details of this matter.
To bring Trigger and friends up to speed, here's a good overview of the history of the Voting Rights Act: http://www.oag.state.ny.us/family/kids/crime/voting.html#history
As for "character assasination," don't you think the president of the United States should be familiar with the Voting Rights Act, regardless of whether any part of it is up for re-authorization? Frankly, it's hard to defend the president's admitted lack of knowledge.

I think the President should be familiar with every act of Congress ever passed, plus every Supreme Court decision, and have the provisions of each memorized. I think he should also know the names of the leaders of every country in the world, plus all their vital statistics, particularly if their main export is bauxite. I think he should know the names of every congressman and woman, the birthdates and ages of all their kids and spouses and pets, plus their favorite colors ( particularly the pets' ). I think he should recognize quotes from " Monty Python and the Holy Grail " and " Breakfast Club " ( though not necessarily " Pretty in Pink "). Lastly, I want him to be able to recognize each and every citizen by name simply by smelling a handful of their armpit hair ( pulled out by the roots ). I don't think that's too much to ask.
Yeeoooooch! I was with you until the last one, pal (especially on "Holy Grail" references). But now I'm just a little freaked-out by your post. Again I say: Yeeoooooch!
